He took the throne twice. He won at Varna and the second Kosovo, and withdrew for a time in favour of his son Mehmed II.
Sultan Murad II was born in 1402. His father was Çelebi Mehmed; his mother was Emine Hatun, daughter of Süli Bey of the Dulkadiroğulları. He was a tall, fair-skinned sultan with a hawk-like nose and a handsome face, and he spoke very well. His greatest happiness was to be the father of so rare a man as Mehmed the Conqueror.
Murad II wished to live a calm and untroubled life, yet when needed he was full of energy, brave and daunted by nothing. Europeans acknowledged that, had he wished, he could have conquered the whole of Europe. Through thirty years of rule he governed his country with great honour and won the affection of everyone under his command. He was devout, just and gracious. He passed his childhood at Amasya and was nineteen when he came to the throne.
